South Korean director, creator, and writer of the hit series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, confirmed the news in an interview with Associated Press on Tuesday, 9 November.

“There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season,” he said at a red carpet celebration for the show alongside lead actor, Lee Jung-jae.

“So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season.”

“It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen,” Hwang explained.

He continued: “But I will promise you this, Gi-Hun will come back, and he will do something for the world.”

According to NBC News, Netflix has not formally announced a second season.

Released on 17 September, Squid Game follows Seong Gi-Hun, played by Lee, as he and hundreds of other desperate contestants in financial debt compete in a violent competition of children’s games for KRW45.6 billion (RM160 million).

According to Netflix, the show is the platform’s biggest-ever series launch.
