‘Star’ team shines in Bar Council polls

The new Bar Council committee will take office in March.

KUALA LUMPUR: Lawyers in the country have chosen to go overwhelmingly with one camp for their 2021/2022 Bar Council leadership, unlike last year when six candidates from each side were voted in.

This time around, members of the “Star” team swept nine of the 12 positions, with veteran lawyer Hendon Mohamed coming out tops with 2,952 votes.

Others in the line-up were Roger Tan Kor Mee, Karen Cheah Yee Lynn, Honey Tan Lay Ean, New Sin Yew, HR Dipendra, B Anand Raj, Farez Jinnah and A Surendra Ananth.

The “One Bar For All” team members who made it were Roger Chan Weng Keng, Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali and Murshidah Mustafa.

The incumbents who lost were treasurer Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab and council members Yusfarizal Yussoff and Syazlin Mansor. Twenty-seven candidates contested in the election.

Anand Raj, Farez and Surendra made it for the first time after previous unsuccessful attempts.

Scrutineers Ahmad Moosdeen, Zainudin Ismail and Krishna V Dallumah announced the results last night after the postal ballots were counted and verified. A total of 20,653 ballots were issued but only 5,647 valid votes were received.

The term of the 38 current Bar Council members will expire at the next annual meeting (AGM) scheduled for March 13, 2021.

The new council will consist of the 12 members elected yesterday, as well as the immediate past president and vice-president, the chairman of each of the 12 state Bar committees, and 12 state Bar representatives.

They will meet immediately after the AGM to elect a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer among themselves.
