Selangor to take 3 new initiatives to curb spread of Covid-19

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari says cargo workers at KLIA will be isolated and screened for Covid-19.

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has announced three new initiatives to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The initiatives, agreed upon during the 14th Selangor Security Council special meeting, are to isolate KL International Airport’s (KLIA) cargo workers, identify five locations to open low-risk quarantine and treatment centres, and increase coordination with district health offices to expedite screening of foreign workers.

Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the first is an initiative by the state government and related agencies to help curb the spread of infection among workers at KLIA, especially foreigners.

He said 9,056 (82%) of the 11,000 local and foreign workers in the cargo division had undergone screening, with only seven positive cases detected since last Thursday. The seven are Malaysians.

The cost of the screening will be borne by the company while the state will bear half of the cost of accommodation for the participants from Nov 26 to Dec 9, he said in a statement..

Amirudin said the second initiative was to provide accommodation for asymptomatic positive individuals to reduce the number of patients at Covid-19 hospitals.

On the third initiative, he said the state government had ordered the district safety committees and disaster management committees to coordinate with the local authorities and district health offices to expedite the screening of foreign workers.

He said although there had been a rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in the state, the situation was under control.

“This is because the new cases come from areas where the enhanced movement control order is being enforced,” he said.
