Selangor Issues Statewide Cholera Alert To All Its Hospitals & District Health Clinics

The 12 November circular, sighted by SAYS, is signed by Selangor health director Dr Sha’ari Ngadiman, who said that a case of cholera in the Petaling district was detected.

According to the circular, the case involves a Malaysian citizen.

“In this regard, it is hoped that all parties will take note and improve control and prevention measures more effectively in accordance with existing guidelines,” it said.

No other details such as the age, gender, and condition of the patient were mentioned in the circular.

Early symptoms of the disease include painless watery stool and vomiting and can lead to dehydration, circulatory collapse, and even death if left untreated.

Report immediately the occurrence of cholera cases (suspected or case that has been confirmed by the laboratory) to the nearest district health office by telephone and e-notification system within 24 hours.

– Taking stool samples for texture and sensitivity tests for suspected cases.

“Failure to report could result in prosecution under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988,” read the circular issued to 11 health district offices and 12 directors of hospitals in Selangor.

The public is advised to only drink treated water or water which has been properly boiled,
– Practise good self-hygiene including washing hands,
– Seek immediate treatment if symptoms associated with cholera occur, and
– Avoid consuming raw food or food which was not cooked properly.
