GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state government has expressed its thanks to the National Security Council for considering a proposal by the state security committee to carry out targeted lockdowns instead of general restrictions under the conditional movement control order.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state committee had made an application for the implementation of CMCO only in targeted locations, such as affected mukim (sub-district) or localities.
“Through the announcement made by Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob this evening, the CMCO will only be extended to Mukim 12 in the southwest district and Mukim 13 of the northeast district from Dec 7 to Dec 20.
“Meanwhile, the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) will be implemented involving two red zone localities, namely, flats in Persiaran Paya Terubong, Relau and Flat Desa Bistari Blocks A and B, Batu Uban,” he said in a statement today.
He said 10,000 people were expected to be affected at the flats in Persiaran Paya Terubong, Relau, and 2,300 people at Desa Bistari flats, Blocks A and B, in Batu Uban.
Chow said the police would be responsible for implementing controls at the locations with the assistance of the armed forces, civil defence and Rela volunteers.
He said the state health department had stated a need for the implementation of EMCO in both localities to prevent the spread of Covid-19 among the local populace and not allow a risk of transmission to the surrounding communities,” he said.
He urged all residents in the EMCO localities to cooperate with the security forces and also the district health office staff on duty.
