The Melaka state assembly has been dissolved, prompting a state election to take place within the next 60 days while the country is battling against the COVID-19 pandemic
According to Free Malaysia Today, Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam dissolved the Melaka state government after four state assemblypersons (ADUNs) announced that they withdrew their support for Menteri Besar (MB) Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.
The state assembly dissolution was announced by State Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh in a press conference today, 5 October.
He said the date for the state poll will be decided by the Election Commission (EC).

Prior to this, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri expressed his concern over the possibility of a re-emergence of the COVID-19 outbreak in the state should a Melaka state election be held
Ismail said he acknowledged the concerns raised by the rakyat that the Melaka state election could spell a similar disaster as seen in the previous state election in Sabah, reported New Straits Times.
“Prior to the (state election), Sabah had recorded a low number of (COVID-19) cases. There was a surge in cases afterward, causing the people to raise their concerns over a possible repeat of the situation,” said the premier today.
“If it ever comes to that (state election), the Election Commission will issue stringent SOPs (standard operating procedures).”
He said the Ministry of Health (MOH) will be consulted if a state election is held.
The premier also said he will leave the matter to UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to address the status of the Melaka state government.

Yesterday, 4 October, four ADUNs, led by former Melaka MB Datuk Seri Idris Haron, announced that they had withdrawn support for Sulaiman
Idris, who is the Sungai Udang ADUN, along with three other ADUNs from UMNO, Bersatu, and an independent, said the state government had fallen in a press conference on Monday.

Following that, it was reported that PH representatives in Melaka would be meeting the state governor to discuss the future of the state.
