KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 — DAP has accepted party veteran Lim Kit Siang’s decision to decline the position of “mentor” for the party he co-founded over 50 years ago.

Party secretary-general Anthony Loke said the party respected Lim’s decision.

“Kit Siang already said that he will continue to support us all the way, but he just doesn’t want the ‘mentor’ title,” Loke told reporters during a press conference at the DAP headquarters today.

Lim, who is Iskandar Puteri MP, announced his formal retirement from politics during the DAP 17th Annual Congress last month.

He also said that he would not be contesting any position, whether for the party’s central executive committee or in future parliamentary or state elections.

Yesterday, the 81-year-old said that he had informed Loke of his stance a few days ago and pledged his full support to the new generation of party leaders.

Lim also said that he would always be available to offer his views and advice when asked by the party leadership even though he may no longer hold an official position.

When asked if Lim’s decision had anything to do with the ‘Lim dynasty’ perception, Loke said no.

“The mentor position was not an official party position and it would not have affected the party structure.

“As said before, he will support us. He just doesn’t want a title,” said Loke.
