Datuk Pang Chin Hin, founder of Mamee-Double Decker Sdn. Bhd., has passed away

On 5 November, the founder of the favourite Malaysian snack Mamee Monster, Datuk Pang Chin Hin, passed away at age 96, as reported by Sin Chew Daily.
The late founder, who had initially delved in selling used cars, began to venture into manufacturing food in 1971 before Mamee was established.

In 1971, Datuk Pang and his partner founded Pacific Food Products in Melaka to manufacture instant noodles. However, soon after, the brand was revamped due to the demand for easy-to-eat snacks, instead of whole meals, as reported by South China Morning Post.
His son, Tee Chew, discovered that rubber tap workers were eating dry noodles straight from the packet due to their inability to cook them because of their working conditions. The idea of Mamee then officially came into fruition in 1974.
The brand name ‘Mamee‘ originated from the word ‘mummy’, to represent the strong connection a person has with their mother. Beyond the original noodle snack, the company has since expanded into producing over 50 brands like Double Decker in 1980 and Mister Potato in 1992.

Since Pang’s passing, his legacy will be carried on by his son, Pang Tee Chew, with his role as the chief executive officer (CEO) and director of Mamee-Double Decker Sdn. Bhd. whereas his grandson, Pierre Pang will take on the role as the Group CEO.
