The incident on Monday afternoon, 9 May, sparked panic among motorists and tourists inside cable cars passing over the scene.
According to the Pahang Fire and Rescue Department, the family’s white Hyundai Elantra slid down the slope of Jalan Genting Highlands at Kilometre 2.9 while engulfed in flames, reported Sinar Harian.
The fire brigade managed to put out the fire but it had destroyed almost 80% of the vehicle.
Based on the 23-second recording, a few pedestrians are seen waving their arms to warn motorists of the flaming vehicle, while several vehicle owners can be seen backing up as the burning Elantra slid backwards down the road.
The driverless car slid and swerved about 100m before it collided with a Toyota Vellfire that could not evade it in time, reported New Straits Times.
“The couple and three children who boarded the car were safe and the cause of the fire is still under investigation,” the fire department’s Public Relations Officer Zulfadli Zakaria was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
He added that nobody else was hurt in the incident.
