KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 — Fuziah Salleh, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for Kuantan, is not one to tolerate chauvinism after years of fighting to get the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill passed in Parliament.
The law is now being tested after the incumbent Kuantan MP received an obnoxious comment on TikTok telling her to “stay home” and “play with your man” during a recent livestream campaign, The Star reported today.
Refusing to let the commenter get away with it, Fuziah said her campaign staff had lodged a police report over the unsolicited sexual comment.
“I don’t mind if there are haters who want to say negative things but what is happening is there are people who make inappropriate comments.
“This person said, ‘You are old. Just stay at home and play with your man, makcik. No need to bother trying to be a minister.’
“I am okay if you don’t like me. But I will not accept it if you harass me. I will not take it lightly when there are those who use such words,” Fuziah was quoted as saying.
Fuziah said she had no reason to turn a blind eye to such remarks made toward her when she was among those who championed the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill.
“If anyone can simply do such a thing to me, then they can do it to someone else’s mother, sister and other women. I want to show that this behaviour is unacceptable in our society.
“I could have just ignored it but I want to send a message here that such a way of speaking cannot be accepted. You must not do that to anybody.
“Women out there who face harassment must also not be afraid of taking action,” she was quoted adding.
The Star reported Pahang police chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf confirming receipt of a complaint and said the case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting the modesty of a person. Upon conviction, an offender may be punished with imprisonment for a maximum of five years or a fine, or both.
