According to Bernama, Nanta said this is because of the government’s recent move to expand the sale of test kits to supermarkets, convenience stores, and petrol stations.
“The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) was told the prices offered at supermarkets and convenient stores are as low as RM6.90 each, while KK Supermart is selling them for only RM6.60 each,” he said at the launch of COVID-19 self-test kit sales at KK Supermart in Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) on Monday, 1 November.
“This is surely very good news to consumers in the light of the situation today.”
The government had also fixed the maximum retail price for COVID-19 self-test kits at RM19.90 per unit and its wholesale price at RM16, as of 5 September.
However, Nanta said yesterday that a new ceiling price will be announced soon and they are committed to keeping it lower than RM10 nationwide.
The minister added that the government’s decision to expand sales to more premises will also encourage more competition in the retail sector, so prices can be brought further down for consumers.
Furthermore, as of October 29, MDA has approved a total of 54 brands of COVID-19 self-test kits for public use.
As COVID-19 becomes endemic, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has encouraged Malaysians to be more responsible and take regular COVID-19 self-tests if in frequent contact with others.
