PETALING JAYA: Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub has urged Umno to table a motion of no confidence in Johor Menteri Besar Hasni Mohammad during the last day of the state assembly tomorrow.
The Pulai MP said this was to test whether Hasni’s leadership was capable of surviving.
“It is important for the people to see if the government of the day, whether at the federal or state level, has the legitimacy to rule.
“This confidence motion will be able to prove the legitimacy of PPBM representatives’ support for the Johor Perikatan Nasional government,” he said in a statement.
He hinted that “something important” was likely to happen tomorrow during the final day of wrapping up the state budget.
Salahuddin’s comments come after Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu, who is also the PPBM deputy president, lost a vote of confidence in the Perak state assembly yesterday.
A total of 48 state assembly members had voted against him, with only 10 votes in support and one spoilt vote. The new menteri besar has not been chosen yet.
Johor’s current state government was formed by an alliance of PPBM and Umno in February after PPBM left Pakatan Harapan (PH), causing the collapse of the ruling coalition.
Barisan Nasional holds 16 seats in the 56-seat Johor state assembly, comprising 14 from Umno and two from MIC. PN holds 13 seats, 12 from PPBM and one from PAS.
The opposition PH holds 27 seats, of which 14 are from DAP, nine from Amanah and four from PKR.
Yesterday, Hasni said he was confident the 29 assemblymen from the ruling coalition and 27 opposition representatives would back the budget when it goes to the vote tomorrow.
Hasni said this was based on the debates on the budget which were wrapped up on Thursday night, pointing out he saw no issue that could prevent it from being passed.
Hasni will wrap up the budget tomorrow before the voting process. Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Gambir assemblyman, is expected to be present.
