KUALA LUMPUR: The government is open to suggestions to review laws including the Official Secrets Act (OSA), the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
De facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan said certain improvements could be made to balance the interests of both the public and the country.
“This is crucial as each law has its own objectives,” he said.
Takiyuddin was replying to R Sivarasa (PH-Sungai Buloh), who said access to information under certain Acts was crucial in fighting corruption and abuse.
“Is the government considering to implement the Freedom of Information Act and amend the OSA while protecting the country’s secret?” Sivarasa asked.
Takiyuddin said Putrajaya reviewed certain laws, including the OSA, from time to time. He said the government has no problem listening to views that will help improve such legislature.
In November last year, then de facto law minister Liew Vui Keong had said the OSA would be repealed but some of its vital functions incorporated into the proposed Freedom of Information Act.
