According to Tuan Ibrahim, who is the PAS deputy president, the Cabinet decided to take this step towards protecting the sensitivities of any race or religion amidst the controversy over the whiskey brand Timah.
“The Cabinet has decided that there cannot be any production of goods that can cause distress among the rakyat including in the context of ethnicity and religion. This will be a policy,” he reportedly said.
The PAS Minister was speaking at the PAS Youth Muktamar in Port Dickson earlier today, 30 October. The event was streamed live on the Facebook page of the PAS deputy president.
During his speech, Tuan Ibrahim mentioned that issues concerning religions, when discussed in the Cabinet, are normally referred to PAS ministers, according to a report by Malay Mail.
“Whatever issues that concern the religion they will direct it to us, and this includes the issue of Timah,” the portal reported him as saying.
PAS’ Idris Ahmad serves as the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Religious Affairs.
According to Tuan Ibrahim, attempts to use the Timah issue against PAS has backfired against others.
Amidst the controversy, the manufacturer has agreed to consider changing the Timah name, according to a statement by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP).
