According to Malaysiakini, Shafee previously surrendered his passport to the court as part of his bail terms in his ongoing criminal trial.
However, he said that he needed to fly to New York to accompany his son who is continuing his higher education in the United States.
The judge allowed it after no objection was raised by deputy public prosecutor S Nithia.
The Edge Markets reported that in his application before the court, Shafee said that he needs to fly to New York on 27 October and return on 30 November to help his son “settle in” at the New School Parsons in New York.
He is also facing two charges of engaging in transactions resulting from illegal activities, namely submitting incorrect tax returns.
