KUALA LUMPUR: There is no rush to table a motion to debate the postponement of the general election and by-elections without having to declare an emergency, Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Rashid Hasnon told the Dewan Rakyat.
Explaining why he had rejected a motion on the matter, Rashid said: “Please write to the speaker if there is still unhappiness (over the issue) but the decision is final under Standing Order 43,”
He was replying to Mukhriz Mahathir (Ind-Jerlun), who asked why his motion on postponing general elections without the need for an emergency had been rejected.
“In the motion, I suggested that the matter be reviewed and I raised it in the Dewan Rakyat,” Mukhriz said, adding that speaker Azhar Azizan Harun had replied saying that the government needed to review written laws.
“That is what I had requested, and I don’t see why my motion was rejected,” Mukhriz added.
On Nov 18, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong agreed to declare an emergency in the Batu Sapi parliamentary constituency, in effect cancelling the by-election for the seat.
Putrajaya is also considering an emergency in the Gerik and Bugaya areas where by-elections are scheduled to be held.
