The incident happened on Friday morning, 8 April, when the 34-year-old man reportedly asked his father to give him money.

When his elderly father refused, the suspect went on a rampage, reported The Borneo Post.

He then threatened to lace the rice stored in his family’s longhouse in Sungai Kelitang, Bekenu with poison.

The suspect was then arrested by the Miri Criminal Investigation Division in less than two hours. The police also seized a machete during the arrest.

Miri deputy police chief Supt Mohd Sabri Zainol confirmed the arrest when contacted by The Borneo Post.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

The suspect could be punished with a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both. When there are threats to cause death or grievous bodily harm, the sentencing can be extended up to seven years.
