With popular road trip spots like Melaka, Penang, and Ipoh, it’s easy to overlook Perlis as a holiday destination

Not many might know that there’s actually several fun activities to do in Malaysia’s smallest state.

Doctor and adventure junkie, Jeevitha Kumar, revealed some of these ‘hidden gems’ after a recent trip.

Speaking to SAYS, she shares that she often travels interstate, as part of a non-governmental organisation, to hand out medical supplies and food aid. While she’s at different locations, she also takes the opportunity to explore as much as she can.

So if you’re thinking of heading to Perlis, take a look at some of her must-visit places and activities that you can add to your itinerary:

1. Take a peaceful stroll in Kangar’s paddy fields

Kangar is the state capital and the largest town in Perlis. “Gaze at every corner of Perlis and you would see paddy fields. Indeed, it is such a peaceful shift of scenery away from high-rise buildings.”

She recommends taking a moment to explore by walking in between the fields while you capture amazing shots of the landscape.

“Depending on the time of visit, the colour of the fields changes, so plan your timing well.”

2. Catch the sunset and enjoy delicious seafood at Kuala Perlis

Kuala Perlis is the main port of Perlis and the second-largest town in the state.

“Let’s face it, most people equate Kuala Perlis as the gateway to Langkawi topped off with its delicious seafood. One would be surprised at just how beautiful the landscape could be during sunset,” she shares.

According to Jeevitha, Kuala Perlis is one of the best places to catch every sunset hue behind the islands.

“Do remember to visit The Ocean Glow for this breathtaking scenery with no charges.”

3. Hike up Pintu Wang Gunung summit and enjoy a glimpse of Thailand (no passport needed!)

“Perlis may not be synonymous with hiking but its limestone hills that borders much of Malaysia and Thailand will definitely pose a challenge. If you are into hiking with elements of obstacle challenges then Pintu Wang Gunung is the right place to venture.

“With an elevation of over 400m and a total round distance of 7km, this steep climb uphill is well worth the half-day hike as you weave in and out of the Malaysian-Thai border. YES! No passports needed. What awaits you at the summit is the view of Thailand and the vast paddy landscape of Kangar.”
