In a tweet published on Wednesday, 10 November, Tan Sri Annuar Musa uploaded photos of download speed test results of mobile phones, believed to be connected to the 5G network.

“Speed test results for 5G — 1,000mbps! Imagine watching YouTube 1080p smoothly. This is our near future. Are you ready for 5G, Keluarga Malaysia?” he wrote.

“Bro, you are truly a boomer,” said a netizen, who uploaded a screenshot showing videos on YouTube now support up to 4320p — or commonly known as 8K.

One Twitter user said, “Did you know 4K streaming only needs 25mbps?”

The 5G technology is capable of delivering up to 20gbps, about 20 to 100 times faster than 4G.

One netizen sarcastically added that people in Kelantan have been streaming Dolby Vision content in 4K resolution from a long time ago.

“I understand everyone’s concerns. However, with 5G, streaming high-quality video is just the very, very least we can expect,” the Communications and Multimedia Minister tweeted yesterday, 11 November.

“Think about the superior performance in VR, AR, MR, and IoT (virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and Internet of Things). The possibilities are endless. Our imagination is the only limit.”

As of now, the 5G network has yet to roll out to consumers.

According to The Edge Markets, Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) is Malaysia’s sole 5G wholesale service provider.

It is currently undergoing discussions with telecommunications companies (telcos) regarding the reference access offer (RAO) for the 5G network.

Formal commercial negotiations will only take place with telcos after the RAO is finalised.
