Find better ways to prevent clinical waste piling up, says Masidi

Piles of clinical waste from quarantine centres. A Sabah waste management company has been told to look for more effective methods.

KOTA KINABALU: The state government has instructed a company in charge of managing clinical waste in Sabah to look for more effective packaging methods.

Masidi Manjun, state minister of local government and housing, said the government has been monitoring the daily amount of clinical waste received for treatment and disposal by the company.

He said all the clinical waste was from 45 Covid-19 quarantine centres in the state.

The state environment department had found that there has been an increase in clinical waste due to the rise in Covid-19 cases in Sabah.

Residents at an industrial area in Lok Kawi have complained about the piles of waste.

Masidi said Sedafiat Sdn Bhd, the only company that handles clinical waste in Sabah, receives six to 13 tonnes of clinical waste per day.

“The company has been given permission to dispose of the clinical waste in Peninsular Malaysia, and the health ministry has been asked to inform the port authorities and customs about the delivery of these clinical waste containers so as to expedite its delivery for immediate treatment,” he said.

He also said the government has instructed the company to expedite the construction of incinerators in Sabah so clinical waste in the state could be handled more effectively.
