According to Bernama, the incident happened at 1.30pm when the victim — Muhammad Hayden Mohd Hussairi — took the escalator down from the second floor with his parents.
The three-year-old’s right foot was suddenly caught in the gap between the escalator rail and the step.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Norazam Khamis said a team of seven firemen from the Cyberjaya fire station was rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 1.48pm.
A witness, who wishes to be known only as Nurul, told Bernama that she heard a loud scream in the mall before realising that a boy’s foot was stuck in the escalator.
“Fortunately, someone quickly pressed the emergency button to stop the escalator,” she said.
“The toddler cried for almost one hour before the fire and rescue department came to extricate his foot.”
Photos of the fire and rescue department saving the boy have gone viral on Facebook, with many netizens reminding parents in the comments section to be careful while taking escalators with their children.
Many Facebook users also lauded the firemen for rescuing the boy.
