A statement on Maybank’s Facebook page published today, 15 December, reads: “Kindly be informed that effective 1 February 2022, the ATM interbank cash withdrawal fee of RM1 will be reinstated by banks.”
Checks show that CIMB, Citibank, HSBC, and several other banks have also made similar announcements on their respective social media channels.
The move was to encourage people to withdraw cash at their closest ATM, regardless of the bank, and to prevent crowds from gathering in public places to stop the spread of COVID-19.
With the return of the interbank fee, customers may still continue to perform cash withdrawals at their own bank ATMs without extra charges.
