Malaysia Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) in a joint statement on Monday, 8 November.
According to The Straits Times, only six flights a day between both countries have been planned for a start.
Applications for the Vaccinated Travel Pass (VTP) will start from 22 November, and more details about the scheme will be announced soon.
In the joint statement, it is said the Prime Ministers also recognised that COVID-19 has “disrupted people to people connections between the two countries, and separated families for many months”.
They agreed that it was timely to “progressively resume cross-border travel in a safe manner”, given the progress made in both countries towards vaccinating their respective populations and in managing the pandemic.
“We look forward to launching a similar VTL scheme between Singapore and Johor in the near future,” said Lee.
Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri said the VTLs were another important milestone in the longstanding Malaysia-Singapore cooperation.
“The VTLs will allow travel as our two countries gradually reopen our borders responsibly by balancing the need to recover our economies while ensuring safety and health of our peoples from COVID-19,” he said.
