According to New Straits Times, it was the first day of school for the Standard One and Standard Two pupils and teachers of Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Serdang in Selangor.

The teachers and students found themselves trapped after the school grounds were flooded by the heavy downpour and had to move to an upper floor of the building.

They called the Fire and Rescue Department for help at about 7.45pm.

A team of 10 firefighters from the Serdang station carried the pupils on their shoulders and waded through floodwaters to evacuate them to safety.

The students were driven out of the school compound by two four-wheel drive vehicles.

“The pupils were handed over to their parents who were waiting at the scene. The teachers who were stuck have been saved as well,” said Norazam.

He added that the floodwaters had receded to knee-high level when the firefighters finally completed the rescue operation and left the school at about 10pm.

“The victim, who is paralysed and lives alone, was brought to a nearby multi-purpose hall. She was later picked up by a relative,” he said.

According to Bernama, other districts in Selangor, Kedah, and Melaka were also hit by flash floods after experiencing three hours of heavy rain that began around 4.30pm.

Relief shelters have been opened to house the evacuees and affected families.
