EMCO in Seberang Prai prison, quarters ends but no respite for Ipoh folk

The EMCO at Taman Meru 2C in Ipoh has been extended until Dec 10.

KUALA LUMPUR: The enhanced movement control order (EMCO) at the Seberang Prai prison and the prison quarters in Penang will end as scheduled today, as the number of cases there have fallen.

Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said this today at his daily press conference, adding that two other EMCOs, at a prison in Sandakan and a temporary detention centre in Tawau, would also end tomorrow as scheduled.

However, the EMCO in zones B and C of Taman Meru 2C in Ipoh, Perak, has been extended until Dec 10. It was initially scheduled to end today.

“The health ministry confirmed that the last reported case at the Seberang Prai prison and prison quarters was on Nov 29.

“All test samples have returned and there are no pending results, so the government has agreed to end the EMCO there today,” Ismail said.

The area was originally placed under EMCO from Oct 22 to Nov 19 but it was extended again to Dec 2.

The Sandakan prison, its staff quarters in Taman Wira and the Tawau temporary detention centre were placed under the EMCO from Nov 6 to Nov 19 before being extended. Ismail said the last case in Sandakan was on Nov 27 while the last case in Tawau was on Nov 30.

The EMCO in two other localities in Sabah – Kampung Nahaba and Kampung Tegudon in Kota Belud – will also end today as scheduled.

Meanwhile, Ismail said 290 people were arrested by police yesterday for flouting SOPs, with 285 of them fined, four remanded and one granted bail.

Most cases were for not practising physical distancing (103), failing to record customers’ personal details when entering shops (72) and not wearing face masks (67).

There were also 29 individuals who were held for crossing district and state borders without permission and seven who were caught at entertainment outlets.

The authorities also detained 27 undocumented migrants and one suspected smuggler yesterday as part of the ongoing Ops Benteng campaign.
