When our electrical and electronic items die, they should not be going into the trash along with everything else
Be it our laptops, handphones, refrigerators, or TVs, these ‘e-waste’ should be properly disposed through the right channels.

The issue is more than just the fact that it builds up landfill; most e-waste may contain materials that are potentially hazardous and toxic to our health and the environment when it is simply discarded.
Besides, the smaller parts that make up the whole unit can be salvaged for a new purpose in other projects and devices.Â
The tricky part about proper disposal and recycling practices is that sometimes it can be very mafan.
To help, here are five places that will recycle your e-waste:
1. UrbanR Recycle+

UrbanR Recycle+ is based in Cheras and collects scraps of electronics, electrical devices, and “computer-related stuff“. They will only charge a collection fee if the items that need to be picked up are large household appliances, such as refrigerators and washing machines. Additionally, the items can be dropped off at their store, Artemis Space located in 1 Shamelin Mall.

2. SOLS Tech

SOLS Tech is a computer refurbishing initiative under not-for-profit organisation, SOLS 24/7. The organisation collects mainly old and unused electronic devices, which are then refurbished and distributed to various projects and deserving communities.
As a Microsoft-licensed refurbisher, they guarantee that “donated computers are refurbished to the highest standard possible, data wiped, and equipped with original software”.
Items can be dropped off at their office in Taman Sri Sinar, but do give them a call prior to the visit.

3. Pertubuhan Amal Seri Sinar (PASS)

PASS has over 300 orange-coloured recycle bins located around the Klang Valley for the public to drop off their e-waste and other recyclables. You can also find them at 26 mobile locations every weekend – which are updated on their Facebook page – or call them to pick up bulkier items.

4. Taiwan Buddhist Tzu-Chi Foundation Malaysia

In addition to other recyclables, the Foundation also collects:
– computers, communications, and consumer appliances (“3C products”),
– car batteries,
– beverage cartons, and
– CDs and DVDs.
There are multiple recycling points and centres nationwide for the public to drop off their e-waste at, which can be viewed on their website. However, they kindly request that the items be pre-sorted before sending it to them.

5. T-Pot Electrical & Electronics

T-Pot Electrical & Electronics purchases scrap, spoilt, and used computer parts and other electrical or electronic waste to be refurbished and resold at affordable prices. See this page for a list of products they will take in.
T-Pot is certified by the Department of Environment Malaysia for e-waste collection and holds a scrap dealer license from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
