In an Instagram post yesterday, 20 September, the owners revealed that the restaurant will be closing at the end of December this year.

“It is with a heavy heart that Mum & Dad have decided to call it a day and retire, with plans to move to Perth to be with our daughters,” read the posting.

The eponymous ‘Mum and Dad’ duo behind Mum’s Place are husband and wife pair Christopher De Mello and Jennifer Tee, who started the business all the way back in September 2001, more than two decades ago.

Nestled in a quiet corner of Damansara Perdana, the place serves food for Malaysians from all walks of life

In their own words, the restaurant is an homage to their mothers’ recipes, and to honour their memories.

Serving up delightful Malaysian cuisine, the menu is an eclectic mix of Malay, Portuguese, Chinese, Indian, and even Nyonya delicacies.

Their signature dish is the deep fried cencaru fish doused in a secret cili padi paste and garnished with fresh petai, a Portuguese-inspired ‘Devil’ curry, as well as various seafood and desserts that will make you call your own mother in tears.

The announcement also included a heartfelt message thanking customers for their patronage over the years

“It has been a fruitful and memorable 20 years of serving many of you who grew up with our delicacies and desserts,” the message began.

“From the bottom of our hearts, we wish to say a huge thank you to all our wonderful guests, employees, and vendors for supporting us over the many years. We look forward to your continued support in the remaining months leading up to December.”

The message also contained a footnote which said that they are hearing offers from anyone interested in buying selected Mum’s Place recipes or the business outright.
