The Selangor government has announced that it will no longer go ahead with its controversial plan to develop the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve (KLNFR) amidst widespread criticism from the public
The state government will now instead begin the process of re-gazetting the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve, according to a statement released by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
“The state government will stop its plan to develop the area and will cancel the move to give ownership of the land to the company involved. We would like to emphasise that all previous de-gazettement processes have followed all procedures and procedures stated in accordance with the law,” Amirudin said.
The decision was taken today, 8 September, during the state executive council meeting.
Assuring that the state government will stop the proposed development plan, Amirudin said that they will begin the process of “re-gazetting” the Kuala Langat Utara Forest Reserve.
“At the same time, 581.1 hectares of forest land that was initially supposed to replace the degazetted (KLNFR), in Sg Panjang, Ampang Pecah and Bukit Broga, will remain as a permanent forest reserve.”
Only 104 acres out of a total of 1,326 acres of the KLNFR will remain degazetted to complete the land ownership to Busut Baru Orang Asli village to resolve issues that have been pending since 2006
Amirudin stated that they were relocated from their original settlement in 1994 for the purpose of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) construction.
He also said that the state government will consider “a small portion of the area” will remain unoccupied for the purpose of consideration of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) alignment.
The statement stressed that the Selangor government is based on the principle of accountability.
Therefore, it will write to the state speaker to convene a meeting of the Select Committee on Capability, Accountability, and Transparency (SELCAT) to answer any issues regarding the previous gazettement.
