Epic Games Launcher Allegedly Causing AMD Ryzen CPUs To Run Hotter Than Usual

AMD Ryzen owners, take heed. If you’re realising that your CPU temperatures have been running higher than average, there is a solution: disable or shut down the Epic Games Launcher (EGL).

Several users on Reddit had discovered that running the launcher in the background was causing their Ryzen CPU to run approximately 20°C higher than usual. Even more alarming is that this happens even when there are no games running and it is sitting idle. We’ve confirmed the issue with our own Ryzen 7 1800X, where a decrease from 61°C down to 45°C was shown, within seconds of shutting down EGL.

The reason behind the temperature spike has been attributed to EGL sending data while activated to its servers. Reddit users say that the launcher sends around 14 times more data than Steam or NVIDIA Experience does in the background. As to where all your data goes, the EpicWebHelper executable seems to connect to the server below:

At the time of writing, the Reddit community says that there isn’t a fix to the issue, but there are ways to work around it. One such method is to link EGL to GOG Galaxy; the latter has a built-in feature that can automatically close game launchers linked to it after quitting a game.
