In a brief one-paragraph statement, Mohd Zuki stated that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has assented to the reappointment of Idrus as the AG.

The reappointment, he said, is in line with Article 145(1) of the Federal Constitution.

Under Article 145(1), the Yang di-Pertuan Agong shall, on the advice of the Prime Minister, appoint a person — who is qualified to be a Federal Court judge — to be the Attorney General.

Idrus replaced Tan Sri Tommy Thomas who had resigned from the position in late February 2020 amidst the political crisis at the time that saw the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Federal government.

Commenting on his reappointment, Idrus said that he will discharge his duties and perform his functions in accordance with the law and constitution, according to Bernama.

He also thanked the Agong, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, and the government for extending his term as the AG for another year.

The Kedah-born has served in multiple positions such as in the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) division, the head of the Federal Territory Prosecution Unit, and a deputy public prosecutor with the AGC.

Idrus has also served as senior federal counsel to both the Election Commission (EC) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and also as the solicitor general from 2006 to 2014.

He is the older brother of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun.
