3,200 foreign workers under lockdown in Johor

PETALING JAYA: Another hostel for foreign workers will go under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) after a rash of cases there.

The lockdown at Westlite workers’ dormitory in Taman Perindustrian Tampoi Jaya, Johor Bahru, will be implemented from tomorrow until Jan 8, Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.

He said the health ministry had found a total of 115 of the 3,116 residents in the hostel to be Covid-19 positive. All the residents are foreign workers.

The EMCO will involve a total of 231 units at the multi-storey hostel.

On the daily offences, he said police arrested 246 people yesterday over movement control order-related offences.

Ismail said 236 were issued compound fines while the remaining 10 were remanded.

Among the offences were taking part in activities at entertainment centres, failure to wear face masks and failing to provide materials for contact tracing or registration, among others.

A total of 2,955 compliance task force teams were deployed to conduct checks on supermarkets, restaurants, hawker stalls, factories, banks, among others.

Ismail also said police caught 76 illegal immigrants and seized eight vehicles under the ongoing Ops Benteng.

He added that 91,791 people had arrived through KLIA from July 24 to Dec 24 from various countries.

A total of 535 people were sent to hospital for treatment, while 84,233 were allowed to return home and 7,023 are currently undergoing mandatory quarantine.
