It’s your favourite furry friend’s birthday! You might have already figured out their present – it’s that wonderful shiny ball and squeaky stuffed toy they had their eye on the last time you went together to the pet store.
You have their favourite treats in tow and this could possibly be the best birthday bash you’ve ever thrown for them. But wait, you forgot the cake!
With such a limited time, the dog baker won’t be able to create a cake worthy of your favourite pooch and, well, the other cakes are not exactly dog-friendly.
So, what do you do?
Make it an even more memorable and meaningful birthday event by putting together a special cake on your own, of course!
This article will share three simple recipes for a dog cake that would satisfy the meat, fruit and veggie lover in them. Although your furry friend might not be able to communicate it, we’re sure they’ll be happy that you took all the effort to make them a cake.
As usual, just a word of caution: do be selective with the kind of flour you use and be aware of any potential allergens.
The types of flour you can use
Coconut, almond, potato, lentil, chickpea, whole wheat, oat, barley and buckwheat.
The types of flour you should avoid
White or all-purpose flour.
Recipe 1: Sweet Potato Carrot Cake
Cake ingredients:
- 1 cup flour
- ½ cup sweet potato puree
- ½ cup shredded carrots
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 3 tablespoons melted coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ cup water
Frosting ingredients:
- ¼ cup plain yogurt
- ¼ cup sweet potato puree
- Shredded carrots (optional)
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 180°C.
- Mix together honey, coconut oil and sweet potato puree. Add flour, baking powder and water, then stir in carrots.
- Grease pan with coconut oil. Add batter and bake for 20-25 minutes, until the center is firm.
- After the cake cools, top with sweet potato puree, yogurt and shredded carrots.
Recipe 2: Apple Banana Cake
Cake ingredients:
- 1 cup flour
- ¼ cup applesauce
- ¼ cup shredded apple
- 1 mashed banana
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ cup water
Frosting ingredients:
- 1 mashed banana
- Apple slices for topping
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 180°C.
- Mix together mashed banana, shredded apple and applesauce. Next, stir in flour and water.
- Grease pan with coconut oil and bake for 20-25 minutes until center is firm.
- Mix together mashed bananas and flour until you get a frosting-like consistency.
- Cool the cake and decorate with mashed banana and apple slices.
Recipe 3: Meat Lover’s Cake
Cake ingredients:
- 500g lean ground beef
- 1 egg
- ½ cup oats
- ½ cup shredded carrots
- ½ cups peas
Frosting ingredients:
- 1 potato
- ½ cup water
- Peas and carrots for topping
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 180°C.
- Chop and boil potatoes until soft, which will take about 20 minutes.
- Mix together beef, egg, oats, carrots and peas.
- Grease the baking tins with coconut oil and add meat. Bake for 30-40 minutes until the meat is cooked through.
- While waiting for the meat to bake, make your mashed potato frosting by adding boiled potatoes to a bowl. Mix with a hand mixer, adding water until your potatoes reach the desired consistency.
- Once meat cakes have cooled, frost with potatoes and decorate with peas and carrots.
