3 areas placed under EMCO

Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the implementation of the EMCO will facilitate the health ministry to carry out tests and ensure there is no infection in the community.

PETALING JAYA: Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob today announced three areas will be placed under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) from Dec 28 to Jan 10.

Two will be in Johor and one in Negeri Sembilan.

In a statement today, Ismail said the Johor Bahru Correctional Centre in Pontian and the staff quarters will be placed under an EMCO.

In addition, all the detainees from the Kota Tinggi district police headquarters will be placed at the Segitiga Hall in Taman Desa Sejahtera, Kota Tinggi, which will be under lockdown.

The decision to impose EMCO came after screenings found that 125 of the 171 inmates at the district police headquarters were Covid-19 positive.

Meanwhile, the Jelebu prison in Negeri Sembilan and its staff quarters will also be placed under an EMCO.

Ismail said the health ministry had detected eight cases at the Johor Bahru Correctional Centre in Pontian from Dec 16-23. All of whom were inmates attending trial in other districts.

A total of 685 inmates and staff at the centre were in close contact with the eight inmates.

Ismail said the EMCO in the area involved 937 inmates, 322 staff and 128 of their family members living in the 102 staff quarters.

The health ministry has screened 1,086 individuals at the Jelebu prison and the staff quarters as of Dec 22, with 305 inmates and two wardens testing positive.

“The implementation of the EMCO will facilitate the health ministry in carrying out targeted screening on all inmates, staff and close contacts involved to ensure there is no infection in the community,” said Ismail.

Ismail also announced that the EMCO at the Persiaran Paya Terubong flats in Relau, Penang, would conclude today.

Announced on Dec 7, the EMCO in the area was originally slated to end on Dec 31.

Ismail said the health ministry had completed Covid-19 screenings in the area, with positive cases now on a downward trend.

Overall, 113 of the 5,585 residents in the flats had tested positive.

Meanwhile, Ismail said 456 people were arrested by the police yesterday over movement control order-related offences.

Ismail said 421 of them were fined, 34 were remanded and one was granted bail.

Most of the offences, he said, were for participating in activities at nightclubs and pubs (170).

Among the other offences were participating in activities which made physical distancing difficult (167), failing to provide materials for contact tracing or registration (67) and not wearing face masks (45).

Meanwhile, a total of 2,349 compliance task force teams were deployed to conduct checks on 15,226 supermarkets, restaurants, hawker stalls, factories, banks, government offices, as well as land, water and air transport terminals.

The authorities also detained 57 undocumented migrants as part of the ongoing Op Benteng campaign.

They also confiscated three vehicles.

Regarding the mandatory home quarantine, Ismail said 93,070 people who arrived through KLIA were screened for Covid-19 from July 24 to Dec 26 and were placed under quarantine.

Some 536 tested positive and were sent to hospital for treatment, while 85,409 have been allowed to return home.

Some 7,125 people are undergoing mandatory quarantine.
